Recipe: All Natural Watermelon Lime Cocktail

Enjoy This Refreshing All Natural Watermelon Lime Cocktail

The perfect summer cocktail to enjoy from the patio.

In the spirit of backyard barbecues and evenings spent with your close group of friends, this summer cocktail comes in two sizes: Single Serving and an 8-serving version where you use all of a full-sized watermelon. Here, we used a London dry gin, but you can use a wide variety of botanics or sub with your choice of vodka or non-alcoholic spirit. Try it for yourself, or make it for the whole crew.

Single Serving

Ingredients:

  • ⅛ of a full sized watermelon or 4 fl oz of watermelon juice
  • 1.5 fl oz of gin (one shot)
  • 1 lime or 1.5 tsp of lime juice
  • 4 to 5 ice cubes

You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail Shaker (or cup with tight lid)
  • Muddler (or wooden spoon/small rolling pin)
  • Cocktail strainer (or mesh tea strainer)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the green rind away from the watermelon, then slice into approximately 1”x 2”x 2” chunks
  2. Add 3 to 4 chunks of watermelon to a cocktail shaker or container.
  3. Use a muddler to crush your pieces of watermelon to release the juice. At the end, the meat of the melon should be a pulp.
  4. Cut the lime into quarters. Squeeze one slice into the container, discarding the rind. You can also substitute with 1.5 tsp of lime juice. Add more to taste.
  5. Add 1 shot of gin to the container.
  6. Add ice to the cocktail shaker.
  7. Top shaker and shake to mix.
  8. You’ll want to filter the watermelon bits out of your drink. A cocktail strainer works well here, but the same effect can be achieved with a bit of cheese cloth (or a mesh tea steeping basket if you’re feeling really fancy). Pour drink through filter into a glass.
  9. Garnish your glass as you see fit. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Cut a small triangle of the remaining watermelon, then slice a 1” slit up the middle. Be sure not to cut the piece completely apart. Use this slit to slide the fruit onto the side of your glass and serve.
  • Add a slice of lime to the edge of your glass and serve.
  • Before pouring your cocktail, wet the rim of the glass, then coat the rim in Tajin. Pour cocktail directly into the center of the glass to keep the rim in tact. This spicy, salty rim balances the sweetness of the watermelon nicely.
  • Zest a bit of lime on top of your drink and serve.

This produces 8 servings of the cocktail.
