Thanksgiving should be about family, not stress. We gathered our favorite Hoosier places to buy fresh and local turkeys for your Thanksgiving table. Here’s a list of some of our top favorites:

But getting that perfect, local bird can be the easy part of the meal. What about wowing guests with your favorites sides? Or some favorite eats you enjoy out with your family around the Thanksgiving Holiday? Our Edible Indy family came up with a delicious and unique list of sides and other noshes you just have to buy (unless your grandmother makes them better), or ones you can enjoy without lifting much more than a finger.

“I love to cook, but baked goods seem to fail me, so I would rather buy them locally from people who will make my dinner table sing! Check out her menu, ordering options and where to pick them up!”

Contributor Julie Yates turns toMarsh’sfor their Honey Gold Spiral Cut Ham. “I whisk up a glaze to pour on top of this ham and it turns out really yummy!” She even provided this recipe!

1 cup sorghum (or maple syrup)

1 cup Dijon mustard

½ cup apple cider vinegar

4 minced garlic cloves

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 teaspoon dried rosemary

¼ teaspoon crushed red chili flakes

And bake at 275°F for about 15 minutes a pound.

Contributor Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp provided us with a turkey recommendation–because there are never enough–and a taste of history.

“I ordered another Bowman & Landes turkey breast for this Thanksgiving from Pogue’s Run Grocer.” She told us. “My favorite thing to do with turkey, though, is to eat it as a sandwich. A downtown Indianapolis sandwich shop (Between Bread on Court Street, now closed because owner retired) had “The Pilgrim” – turkey breast, cranberry chutney, a slab of cream cheese, and sprouts on pumpernickel bread. I make myself this sandwich every year with leftovers. Yum!”

Now that’s something we would like to see!

Contributor Lisa Banu loves Thanksgiving time so she can drop by Restauration Lafayette and snag some of their savory fall and winter nachos.

“I can’t think of something local for Thanksgiving, but I do look forward to Restauration’s Fall Nachos.” She likes the ones with butternut squash, shaved Brussels sprouts, dried cranberries, organic tortilla chips, cheddar, mozzarella and brie. Honeslty, who can blame her?

Contributor Charity Singleton Craig likes to buy scones from Lulu’s Coffee + Bakehouse to give as gifts for coworkers or a treat for herself around the holidays.

“They would make a great breakfast for Thanksgiving morning while you’re busy cooking. They also do have amazing pies.”

Unlike the large majority of people, Managing Editor Shauna Nosler doesn’t like potatoes—especially mashed potatoes. Alas, her family would be in dire straits if their Thanksgiving dinner didn’t include them and the highly anticipated gravy to drown them in.

“But, through many attempts of trial and error, I’ve come to realize my gravy-making skills are far from envious, so I buy gravy from Fresh Market*—the troops are delighted and I can focus my cooking talents on things like how to mix the perfect dry martini.”
