Albert Trevino, owner of Rene’s Bakery in Indianapolis and known by everyone as Rene, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer, prompting an indefinite closure of the bakery. Rene’s health journey began in the fall of 2022 when he noticed persistent throat issues that were eventually diagnosed as laryngeal cancer in April 2023. His daughter, Olivia Trevino, announced on Friday, July 13, that the coming weekend would be their last weekend open indefinitely as their family turned their efforts towards supporting their dad. She later shared her father’s most recent brain cancer diagnosis.

This news was met with an overwhelming wave of support from the community with lines of patrons wrapping around the block on Saturday. The community support is a testament to Rene’s deep roots in Indianapolis and the deep connections fostered over years of shared smiles and delicious pastries.

For over 20 years, Rene’s Bakery has been a cornerstone of Indianapolis’ food scene, known for its array of French pastries and delectable treats like pumpkin bread and the cranberry loaf (two team favorites.) This cozy bakery has always delighted its customers. Nestled in a cozy shop where customers can witness the joyful hustle of baking, Rene’s has built a loyal following.

A visit to Rene’s is an experience in itself; the small shop, which comfortably fits only a handful of patrons at a time, offers a glimpse into the bustling kitchen where bakers are often seen laughing and sharing jokes. The warm and inviting atmosphere is a testament to Rene’s commitment to his customers, many of whom are regulars.

While the future is uncertain, the community remains hopeful for Rene’s recovery.  “I just want people to know that our goal is to come back, and we appreciate every one. There aren’t words to explain the amount of support from everyone, it is mind-blowing. My dad sees and hears all of the support, and that is what is motivating him to get better.”

Rene’s Bakery has become a pillar of the Indianapolis community, with its croissants playing a part in building the city’s vibrant food scene. But the Indianapolis food scene is more than just about food—it’s about community, people, and sharing daily life together. The outpouring of love and support for Rene reflects the city’s spirit of resilience and solidarity. For those wishing to support Rene during this challenging time, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with his medical bills.

As we send our best wishes to Rene and his family, we are reminded that it is the people and their shared experiences that make Indianapolis a truly special place.
