Cozy Up with These Four Must-Try Dark Beers in Indianapolis
Fall is upon us, and there’s just something fitting about a dark beer this time of year. Though it is nearly always my beverage of choice, I understand it may not be everyone’s cup of tea year-round. But when air cools and the nights grow longer, we instinctively reach for something soothing, and I find there’s a comforting quality about the rich roastiness of a great stout or porter.
Perhaps it’s the coffee of the beer world–something to savor, to linger over with good company. The Indianapolis area is blessed with breweries who are passionate about crafting truly wonderful beer. Here are four distinct brews worth cozying up to this season:

The Crowd Pleaser: Busted Knuckle
Quaff On! Brewing Company
My go-to brew, this porter is everything you could want in a dark beer. It’s not too heavy or bitter, but rather medium-bodied, leaving just a bit of memory on the tongue. Oh-so-drinkable with a generous ABV, Busted Knuckle pairs perfectly with our state sandwich–the beloved pork tenderloin. And a side of fries, of course.
Where to find it: available in 4-packs at most area liquor stores, and on tap at Hard Truth at the Garage Food Hall on Mass Ave., as well as Big Woods in Speedway.

For Traditional Beer Lovers: Biergarten Days Munich Dunkel
Guggman House Brewing Co.
Literally German for “dark,” a dunkel is a malty lager that is dry and easy to drink. This beer finishes with a pleasant crispness that distinguishes itself from some of the heavier styles of dark beer. You’ll notice a roasty flavor profile with hints of caramel and crusty bread. Pair this excellent beer with brats, sauerkraut, and roasted vegetables for an easy, comforting weeknight meal.
Where to find it: Guggman Haus Brewing Co., Indianapolis

For the Coffee Enthusiast: You’re Grounded, Mister
Bad Dad Brewery
Imbued with chocolate, this mocha stout is the epitome of a coffee-forward beer. It manages a rich mouthfeel without any bitterness and finishes smooth. Pair it with a rich stew or even s’mores at an autumn bonfire, as this beer is friendly to both savory and sweet pairings. Simply delicious!
Where to find it: on draft at 317 Burger in Indianapolis and Tried and True Alehouse in Greenwood, and in cans at Goose the Market, Fresh Time in Fishers, Total Wine and More in Noblesville and Greenwood

My Current Crush: Into the Void
Moontown Brewing Company
One of my favorites, this bold, intriguing porter is full of roasty, chocolatey flavor but finishes clean with just a hint of sweetness. Though it carries notes of coffee and cocoa, it won’t compete with dessert, and is a lovely compliment to a rich slice of chocolate cake or a decadent truffle–or two.
Where to find it: on tap at Moontown Brewing Company’s Whitestown and Carmel locations, and at Kahn’s Fine Wine & Spirits and Total Wine & More in Carmel and Nora.
