Food trucks are having a moment. Come to think of it, food trucks have been an American staple since the days of the Wild West. Chuck Wagons brought meat to cowboys. Soon came Chicago’s push carts, loaded down with hot dogs. And more recently, we were blessed with the ubiquitous taco truck. Nothing says “big city” quite like a quick bite from a food truck. And luckily, Indianapolis has dozens of ‘em trawling the streets on hot summer nights. I recently set out to visit a few recommendations from friends and document the best parts of all of them.

Super Tacos

I visited Super Tacos in West Washington to experience authentic Mexican food. I ordered a carne asada torta with all the fix-ins. The mobile restaurateurs whipped up my sandwich to order and it was served piping hot within ten minutes.

Texas Boys BBQ

The next stop was Texas Boys BBQ on Emerson. This is a family-owned crew, and they serve wood-smoked meats in the classic, Texas-style barbecue. I chose the pulled pork sandwich, with a tangy mild sauce. The savory, smoky, and sweet flavors combined for a mouth-watering treat. I rounded out the meal with a side of green beans and mac and cheese.

The sandwich far exceeded my expectations, and the mac and cheese had a distinct, savory taste that I’d never experienced before. The meal was memorable for all the right reasons, and I vowed to return the first chance I got.

Eatzo

For a slightly different BBQ experience, I turned to Eatzo, a food truck based out of Avon, IN. When I visited them, they were posted up in Sarah T Bolton Park in Beech Grove. My two boys had a hankerin’ for nachos, and to their delight, Eatzo had a Texas BBQ version.

They piled meat high on the tortilla chips, and it was sweet and succulent. The portion size was more than generous, and my kids tapped out before I did. The great meal had me checking their menu, which is both eclectic and appetizing. From Greek gyros to Philly cheese steaks to walking tacos, they have a little of everything.

Papa Curl Ice Cream

Despite their appetites being sated, the July heat convinced my kids that ice cream was still on the menu. So, we decided to give Papa Curl’s a shot. Nothing says “American summer” like an ice cream truck, and soft-serve their specialty.

I picked up the Dole pineapple whip in a waffle cone. What can I say? It was light, tasty, and refreshing. It brought a wistful, tropical taste to a tradition from my childhood, and that’s reason enough to give them a try.

Indianapolis has no shortage of options if you want to branch out. From pierogies to arepas to tea cakes, you can find it all. Pay a visit to https://indyfoodtrucks.org/ and you’ll find something for any appetite.
