Indianapolis’ food scene has long been celebrated for its creativity and community spirit, and Chef Alan Sternberg is one of the names at its forefront. With over 20 years of experience and a passion for storytelling through food, Sternberg has brought his unique culinary vision to Bluebeard, where he’s been the executive chef since March 2023.
Bluebeard, located within the downtown Indianapolis neighborhood of Fletcher Place, offers a farm-to-table dining experience that emphasizes community and collaboration with local farmers. The menu changes daily to highlight the freshest seasonal ingredients, with all bread baked fresh at their in-house bakery, Amelia’s.
The restaurant’s ambiance is both cozy and energetic, featuring a “writerly aesthetic” with shelves of books and typewriters, a nod to Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut, after whose novel the restaurant is named.
Bluebeard’s commitment to quality and innovation has earned it recognition as a James Beard semifinalist, and it continues to be a must-visit destination for those seeking inventive cuisine in Indianapolis.

Moving on Up
Hailing from Anderson, Indiana, Sternberg’s culinary journey began as a high school dishwasher in 2003. Eager to learn, he quickly transitioned into cooking, realizing early on that the kinetic energy of the kitchen suited his competitive and curious nature. Although he initially pursued photojournalism at Ball State, Sternberg’s passion for food eventually led him to Ivy Tech’s culinary program in Muncie.
“I was a picky eater growing up,” Sternberg said, “but once I started cooking and learning about food, it became so much more than just a job. It was a way to learn about history, culture, and people.”
Getting Back to Community
Sternberg’s career includes a variety of experiences, from running a small restaurant in Muncie to leading fine dining programs at Cerulean in Indianapolis, where he managed a daily-changing, 10-course tasting menu. This focus on seasonal and local ingredients became a hallmark of his style, with Cerulean sourcing from over 25 Indiana producers at its peak.
Sternberg also spent time at Field Brewing in Westfield, honing not only his culinary skills but also his understanding of restaurant operations. When the opportunity to take the helm at Bluebeard arose, Sternberg saw it as a chance to return to cooking the food he loves while nurturing Indianapolis’ culinary community.

Sternberg’s Mantra: No Repeat Dishes at Bluebeard
At Bluebeard, Sternberg has full creative control, a role he values deeply.
“We change the menu every day here,” he said. “It’s informed by what local farmers and producers have available, which keeps things exciting and fresh.”
This daily change also serves as a challenge to himself and his team. “I have a mantra: I don’t want to repeat dishes. Every season is an opportunity to push myself and my staff to grow creatively.”
Collaboration is central to Sternberg’s leadership. He encourages his team to contribute ideas and he views the kitchen as a space for shared growth. Sternberg said, “cooking professionally is hard work, but when staff feel invested in the menu and the process, it’s more rewarding for everyone.”
Connection Through Food
For Sternberg, food is more than sustenance; it’s an intimate act of connection. “Sharing a meal is one of the few times we slow down,” he said. “Food gives us insight into where we’ve been as humans and where we’re going. It’s an edible history of mankind.”
This philosophy extends to his involvement in events like the Epicurean Indy International Food Festival, where chefs come together to celebrate diverse cuisines and foster community. “These events remind us that while we’re all on our own little islands in our restaurants, collaboration makes us stronger,” he said.

Food is My Church
Whether it’s a thoughtful plate inspired by a week’s harvest or a collaborative dinner with a fellow chef, Sternberg’s work at Bluebeard is a testament to his belief in the power of food to tell stories and build community.
“Food is kind of like my church,” Sternberg said with a smile. “I hold it with reverence, and I’m always looking for ways to learn, grow, and share that with others.”
